 Once World War I had broken out the development of wireless accelerated and after 1918 there was a plentiful supply of surplus equipment and enough broadcasts available to start a new hobby of radio construction. Scores of magazines were published and many ordinary families used wireless sets built by the man of the house.

As a result of this the design of radio sets changed over a very short period from looking like scientific apparatus to pieces of furniture.
