Philco BEF-2 Portable Radio

This neat but rather heavy portable radio, introduced in 1939, was made by the British branch of the US company Philco.

This very clean example is fitted with Mullard equivalents of the US valves shown on the set's label.

RF amp/mixer/local osc DK32 = 1A7EG; IF amp DF33 = 1N5EG, Det/AF amp DAC32 = 1H5EG and Audio output DL35= 1C5EG

The circuit diagram of the BEF2 is shown below. Pretty conventional circuitry with a small frame aerial fitted into the rear cover.

The valves have filaments rated at 1.4 volts which allows some latitude for a standard partly discharged 1.5 volt cell.
