Ancestors of CHARLES ALLAN Isaacs

Notes

8. ELIJAH (John) Isaacs

I have now received a copy of this birth certificate, and it would appear that the birth was registered as a girl! The father was John Lewis Isaacs and the mother was Hannah Isaacs (Benjamin) and the child was born on 21st March 1848 at 27 Hutchinson Avenue, Gravel Lane, Aldgate. I don't know how common it was for the wrong sex to be recorded, but the date and everything else seems to make it unlikely that this is not the correct info.

Liverpool Poor Law Union and Workhouse Situated on Brownlow Hill, Liverpool. The Workhouse was demolished and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Christ the King has been built on the site.
Jim Ralph has given the following Information:
"The Liverpool Workhouse was at 144a Brownlow Hill, Liverpool. It began near the bluecoat school in 1732 and moved to Brownlow Hill in 1769. It was the largest workhouse in the Country and evolved into a small Town with carts and other vehicles moving around within the grounds. There were footwalks for people, a small church seating 800 people and a separate hospital, which at times housed over 1,000 people and became one of the best hospitals in the Liverpool area. It was always over crowded. The poor law Board certified it for 3,280 people but by 1910 there were more than 5,000 people there. There were six people to a bed at times with others sleeping in the corridors. The buildings were demolished before the second World War and the site upon which they stood is now occupied by the Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral."

Just received the death certificate for Elijah Isaacs - it looks as if it is the one!

From Rootsweb
I've done a little more research. I looked in the Dublin list of Electors for Nov. of 1868. It lists a Queen's Square west, north and east...all in the South Dock Ward. Queen's Terrace is also in South Dock Ward. 52 would be on Queen's Square East. I can't find a Queen's Square on the Dublin map, but looking in an Irish Research book the civil Parish for St. Mark's is the Catholic Parish for St. Andrews. There is a St. Andrews about 5 blocks west from Queen's Terrace (which still exists). Queen's Terrace is South of Pearse Street and the River Liffey, West and a little south of the Grand Canal Dock...It is between Harmony Row and Macken Street. My guess is that Queen's Square may not exist any longer...but that it was near Queen's Terrace. Why??? Well Just north of Queen's Terrace is a Pearse Sq West, North and East. My guess is Queen's Terrace could have been just south of that on the South of Pearse St. where some kind of public building is now located,...but it is just a guess. Let us know if you find out anything. My mother was born in 1898 on a street that still exists...but I was disappointed to find out her home had been torn down by 1981 when I visited Dublin.
